Welcome to Loughcrew Gardens

Gate Loughcrew Gardens are a breathtaking spectacle from 17th and 19th century landscape and pleasure gardens. Take a walk through centuries of garden and landscape fantasy. The central area of approximately six acres includes a lime avenue, extensive lawns and terraces, a magnificent herbaceous border and physic border. Within the gardens stand a medieval moote and St. Oliver Plunkett's family church and Tower House.

If you would rather, there is also a longer lake walk around Lough Creeve. There is some beautiful scenery to be taken in along the way, as it goes right past Loughcrew House. With extra treats along the way as the walk itself takes in different forest and rockery walks and also has a fairy ring. This walk starts and finishes at the Limetree Coffee Shop.

There is also a small playground located at the Limetree for the children to play and explore. This playground contains a mini climbing wall to give the children a taste of what is located in the Adventure Centre itself.

A host of enchanting features are displayed in a setting steeped in atmosphere and history. Meet Alice as she strolls through wonderland, encounter fairies and other creatures on woodland walks. Sculptures by acclaimed artist Ann Meldon Hugh and architectural treasures wait around every corner! The result of years of restoration can be seen in this stunning garden comprising a magnificent yew walk, a walled garden, canal and a parterre.

Saint Oliver Plunkett's Church

Saint Oliver Plunkett

Born at Loughcrew in 1625, Oliver spent the first 22 years of his life here in his family house in Loughcrew Gardens and praying in the family Church. One can imagine the young Oliver, playing in the gardens, swinging from the boughs of the ancient yews, fishing in the garden stream, helping out in the garden Corn Mill and walking up to the five thousand year old Cairns to wonder upon the faith of those who had built them.

It's easy to see why the spiritual nature of Loughcrew must have launched the young Oliver on his journey to priesthood and eventual martyrdom. Mass is celebrated every 1st of july at the Church in memory of Saint Oliver's death in 1681. Come and visit Loughcrew and experience for yourself this unique place full of history, spirituality and beauty and see for yourself Saint Oliver's Home and Church. Take a set of keys from The Limetree and explore the wonder of the five thousand year old Cairns. Sit on The Hags Chair as a young Saint Oliver would have done.

Loughcrew is one of Irelands best kept secrets.

Glorious martyr, Saint Oliver Plunkett,
who willingly gave your life for the faith,
help us also to be strong in our faith.

May we be loyal like you
to the see of Peter.

By your intercession and example
may all hatred and bitterness be banished
from the hearts of Irish men and women.

May the peace of Christ reign in our hearts,
as it did in your heart.
Even at the moment of your death.

Pray for us and for Ireland

Amen
Prayer to Saint Oliver Plunkett

Tripdvisor.ie Review

History

Built in the 1850’s Loughcrew House was designed by Charles Robert Cockerell. The originally House was built and burnt down on 3 separate occasions, the final fire taking place in 1964, with the current inhabited part of the house renovated from the original adjoining heating rooms for the orangery. The house sits on 200 acres of parkland and within a valley below the Loughcrew Cairns.

Loughcrew Cairns

The best kept secret in archaeological Ireland. In a landscape of inspiring beauty and intriguing history, the cairns at Loughcrew form the largest complex of passage graves in Ireland, much older than the better known Newgrange.

The Cairns are megalithic structures originally built about 4000 bc as burial chambers. The cairns are in two groups; Carnbane West, about 15 cairns, including Cairn L which is roofed and contains superb symbolic carvings in good condition. This group is some 2km walk from the Car Park on gently sloping ground. Carnbane East includes Cairn T, also roofed and with excellent engravings, and is a shorter but steeper walk.

Starting in 2014 there is a Loughcrew Equinox Festival each March 19th to 21st and September 19th to 21st organised by Oldcastle Tourism Group. Bringing together the archaeological and astronomical past of the cairns as well as the spiritual energy of modern day druids and healers it is a wonderful opportunity to experience the magic of the Carin throughout the Equinox mornings and days. Below is a video from the Autumn Equinox in 2016 courtasy of Boyne Valley Tours.

For an Interactive map of Carnbane East and West click here. This map allows you to view all the individual cairns as well as experience the breathtaking views from atop the rich rolling hills of county Meath. The key to Cairn T is available from the Limetree Coffee Shop in the Car Park, along with books and leaflets on the sites.

Visit the Voices from the Dawn website for more information.
